Water management gels can be a life saver for new plants.
Add gels to your potting soil mixes or biological fertilizers
Horta-Sorb® water management gel polymers are substances that absorb hundreds of times their weight in water. Our 40+ years of experience with super absorbents in agriculture and horticulture demonstrates significantly reduced watering maintenance needed, and provides a more consistent supply of water to the roots.

Initially used as a bare root dip in forestry, Horta-Sorb® polymers were quickly adopted in the landscape, greenhouse, nursery, and numerous agricultural markets. Horta-Sorb® varieties range from bare root gels to hydro-mulching, transplant amendments, potting soil crystals, and “ice packs” for cut flowers and fresh fish shipments.
Horta-Sorb® super-absorbents are the highest quality gel available today and are presented in three particle sizes based on intended use:
Horta-Sorb® LG (2.0mm to 4.0mm) – Use includes larger container media amendment, landscape plantings, and numerous applications where aqueous stabilization is desired. Absorbs about 300 times its weight in water over a period of 2-3 hours! Resulting gel resembles glass chips about the size of a marble, but full of water. Some applications are in floral arrangements, imitation ice applications, and to replace meat in engineering trials of food processing equipment.
Horta-Sorb® MD (1.0mm to 2mm) – Use includes smaller container media amendment, flower bed amendment, turf, and a host of other uses. Absorbs about 300 times its weight in water over a period of 20-45 minutes. Resulting gel resembles glass chips about the size of a garden pea, but full of water. Used in body coolers, headbands and bandanas, as a water separator for fuel lines and storage tanks applications.
Horta-Sorb® SM (0.3mm to 0.8mm) – Exclusively used as a treatment for Bare Root plants of all types, tiny container media amendment, hydromulching and dozens of thickening agent applications for aqueous solutions. Absorbs about 300 times its weight in water over a period of a few seconds to a couple of minutes. Resulting gel transforms water in consistency from loose apple sauce to hard solid state. Typical applications are waste solidification, as a lubricant for cable pulling, to absorb water leaking from waste being transported to landfills, a gelling agent for animal scents for trappers, as an additive to kitty litter, and the list goes on.
There are also hundreds of non-agricultural applications where gels are successfully used.
